Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need the Messiah?
Modern Judaism teaches that if we live a good life, doing good deeds, that we are assured of a place in the life to come. But this is not what Moses taught. The Tenach (Hebrew Bible) tells us that God is a holy God, and demands perfection. Under the Mosaic covenant, God allowed our sins to be ‘covered” by bringing a substitute, that would pay the price of our sin. The substitute was an animal without blemish. The substitute was called a “kippor”, or ransom. This is the word from which we get Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement. However, when the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE by the Romans, there was no longer a way of atonement for our sins. However, God provided a better sacrifice. That sacrifice is the Messiah. The Jewish prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 53) described how Messiah would bear the sins of his people, and become the ransom, or substitute, in our place. He wrote 700 years before Yeshua appeared on the scene!
